Defoaming Agent – Silicone Oil (Polydimethylsiloxane)

The Industry Standard for Foam Control in High-Performance Lubricants

In the blending and application of industrial lubricants, entrained air and surface foam can lead to oxidation, cavitation, and lubrication failure. Chemost provides premium Dimethyl Silicone Oil (also known as Methyl Silicone Oil or PDMS), the most reliable and chemically stable Anti-foaming Agent for modern lubricant manufacturing.

Technical Profile & Mechanism

Silicone-based organosiloxanes have been the cornerstone of anti-foam technology since their inception. Our PDMS additives work by lowering the surface tension of the lubricant film. Because the surface tension of silicone oil is significantly lower than that of mineral or synthetic base oils, it promotes the rapid rupture of air bubbles (desorption) while maintaining a low-strength surface film that prevents re-foaming.

Why Choose Chemost Silicone Defoamers?

Our silicone oils are engineered for B2B industrial blenders who require high-purity additives with consistent performance.

  • Exceptional Efficiency: Achieving maximum results with ultra-low treat rates.
  • Incompatibility by Design: Specifically formulated to have low solubility in lubricating oils, ensuring the additive stays at the air-liquid interface where it is most effective.
  • Chemical Inertness: PDMS is non-reactive. It will not interfere with performance additives like ZDDP, detergents, or extreme pressure (EP) agents.
  • Thermal & Oxidative Stability: Features a high flash point and low pour point, making it suitable for high-temperature engine oils and extreme-cold hydraulic fluids.
  • Volatility Control: Low volatility ensures the anti-foam properties remain effective throughout the entire drain interval of the oil.

B2B Application & Blending Guidance

1. The Inverse Viscosity Selection Rule

To ensure optimal dispersion and defoaming kinetics, we recommend the following selection criteria:

  • For High-Viscosity Lubricants: Utilize Low-Viscosity Silicone Oil to ensure rapid migration to the bubble surface.
  • For Light/Low-Viscosity Lubricants: Utilize High-Viscosity Silicone Oil to prevent complete dissolution and maintain the necessary surface tension differential.

2. Recommended Treat Rates

Silicone oil is highly potent. Over-dosage can lead to "silicone haze" or negative impacts on air release properties.

Standard Dosage: 1-100 u g/g (ppm).

Pro Tip: For most engine and gear oil formulations, a dosage of $5-20\ \mu g/g$ is sufficient to meet ASTM D892 foam test requirements.

3. Compatibility & Blending

Pre-dilution: It is highly recommended to pre-dilute the silicone oil into a 1% or 10% solution in a light solvent or base oil before adding it to the final blend to ensure uniform distribution.

Additive Packages: Compatible with all standard DI (Detergent-Inhibitor) packages.

Case Studies & Applications

  • Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oils: Maintaining oil film integrity in high-shear environments.
  • Industrial Gear Boxes: Preventing overflow and aeration in high-speed splash-lubricated systems.
  • Hydraulic Systems: Ensuring precision control by eliminating air compressibility caused by foaming.

Documentation & Compliance

As a dedicated partner to lubricant factories and wholesalers, Chemost ensures all shipments are accompanied by a full suite of technical documentation:

  1. Technical Data Sheet (TDS)
  2. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS)
  3. Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can silicone oil affect the air release properties of the oil?

A: While silicone oil is excellent at surface defoaming, excessive dosage can slow down air release. We recommend staying within the $1-100\ \mu g/g$ range and performing ASTM D3427 testing.

Q: Is PDMS compatible with synthetic PAO base oils?

A: Yes, it is widely used in both mineral and synthetic (Group IV) formulations due to its limited solubility, which is actually required for the defoaming mechanism to work.

Q: Do you offer non-silicone defoamers?

A: Yes, we also manufacture polyacrylate-type (non-silicone) defoamers for applications where silicone is restricted (e.g., certain paint-sensitive automotive environments).
