What is calcium petroleum sulfonate?
Calcium petroleum sulfonate(sulfonic acids petroleum calcium salts) is a type of lubricants detergent. Detergents are among the most important additives in modern lubricating oils, ensuring their detergency and providing long-term, stable lubrication protection. It is a sulfonate-type detergent and is the most widely used and consumed type.
Calcium petroleum sulfonate is named after the sulfonic acid it is made from, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. Modern calcium petroleum sulfonate is synthetic, and since its raw material is alkylbenzene sulfonic acid, there is no significant difference in properties between the two.
Types of calcium petroleum sulfonate
Calcium petroleum sulfonate can be classified according to its total base number (TBN):
- Neutral calcium sulfonate
- Low-base calcium sulfonate
- Medium-base calcium sulfonate
- High-base calcium sulfonate
- Overbase calcium sulfonate

Calcium petroleum sulfonate manufacturing process
The preparation process of calcium petroleum sulfonate mainly involves carbonation. Using calcium oxide as raw material, carbonation is carried out by passing carbon dioxide through a catalyst to produce calcium sulfonate with a high alkalinity. The specific process is as follows:
Characteristics of Calcium Petroleum Sulfonate
Calcium petroleum sulfonate has excellent properties, making it a primary additive in the important of engine oils.

Calcium petroleum sulfonate has better solubilizing and dispersing abilities than alkyl salicylate calcium and alkylphenol sulfide calcium; however, its acid neutralization rate is slightly slower at high temperatures, and calcium sulfonate has poor oxidation resistance, especially high-base calcium sulfonate, because the high-base component exists in the form of carbonates. These carbonates accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of lubricating oils, leading to their failure. It can be mitigated by using it in combination with high- and low-base calcium sulfonates.
